Scuttle 1

Starting work on the Scuttle

Marking out the steering column position

We began work on the scuttle. To trial fit the scuttle, we needed to mark out and cut the aperture for the steering column on the front bulkhead of the scuttle. The first time you cut in to the fiberglass is nerve wracking. You are conscious that one little slip can damage the gel-coat. We used plenty of masking tape to cover the surrounding areas. We cut the hole undersize and ensured that it was a good fit by filing the hole carefully to size.

Trial fit the scuttle Scuttle in position to determine the datum marks

Satisfied with the position and fit of the hole around the steering column we checked the position of the body and scuttle to find the position of the rivnuts to fix the scuttle

We marked the position on to masking tape on the inside of the chassis. We then had to remove the bodywork to fit the rivnuts. We transferred the marks on the masking tape to the top surface of the chassis, drilled and fitted the rivnuts. We refitted the bodywork
